Recommended Clubs
Sifu Blackley and Sifu Okai are in the process of visiting clubs and
associations throughout the UK. They offer their first hand
recommendations and comments below.
We will not produce a negative review. If your club has been visited
and is not on the recommended list, we are very sorry.
It is likely that we will have discussed the reasons with the
instructor present, if not please contact Sifu Blackley and he will be
glad to give you the reasons.
Kamon Wing Chun Clubs
Chief Instructor Master Kevin Chan (London and the South of
England)
Visited Sept 2000
The standard of instruction and students was very high. A very
practical based session where students were encouraged to think! (very
refreshing). We both thought that the aims of Master Chan in
progressing the style is important for the future of Wing Chun.
The atmosphere at the Covent Garden club and the welcome we
received was second to none, Master Chan is so down to earth we both
felt fully at ease. Truly a five star rating.

Samuel Kwok Martial Arts Association
Chief Instructor Master Samuel Kwok (mostly North UK)
Visited Autumn 1999
Master Kwok is a very knowledgeable instructor with over 30 years
experience. He has a quiet assured manner and no lack of skill. He
teaches in a very traditional manner in the style of Ip Chun.
Instructors in his association are encouraged to do likewise.

International Taijiquan and Shaolin Wu Shu Association
Chief Instructor Master Derek Frearson (UK Wide)
Many visits made.
Master Frearson teaches a number of styles including Wing Chun.
He is very experienced and is currently the only instructor of
Foshan Wing Chun in the UK (correct me if I am wrong). If you are
in the Coventry area his student George Connor is well worth a
visit as are Nottingham Instructors Larry Tuck (Beeston) and Mick
Yates (Bakersfield). Master Frearson teaches himself at the YMCA
Leicester and is also worth a visit. |
Carlton Forum Wing Chun
Instructor Sifu Mick Fox (Nottingham)
Many visits made
Mick teaches a beginners / intermediate class but has a number of
advanced visitors who do their own thing, he is very approachable and
knows his stuff. Not well publicised but don't let this put you off!
Sparring is a major part of the lesson.... too few clubs spar. |
Bingham Wing Chun
Instructor Sifu Gary Wall (Nottingham)
Many, many visits made
This club was originally run by Sifu Blackley. It has now been taken
over by one time student and friend Gary Wall. Good all round
instruction with practical applications and sparring. Gary is
technically sound and very street wise, he is able to demonstrate a
wide range of techniques that he can vouch for first hand. |
James Maude Sports and Social Club
Instructor Mario (Mansfield)
A nice and friendly club with a good atmosphere through the lineage of
Gavin Blackburn and Randy Williams. The beginners' section was well
organized with good amount of detail. The advanced groups continued
this organised theme. Whilst Sifu Mario's students were fairly new to
Wing Chun they were already beginning to show good progress. |
Lenton Community Centre
Instructor Phil Jones
Whilst Sifu Blackley has been unable to attend personally, Sifu Okai
has attended regularly and finds the sessions to be of good quality,
sound Wing Chun with a slant towards combat.
This club is part of the James Sinclair association and whilst most of
the members in Lenton are beginners, this is a good indication that
Sinclair's association should be recommended. |
N.B. Nick Smart's association requested that we did not visit |
